Health Coach Engagement: The Benefits of a Tailored Strategy

Committing to a health program can be challenging but what makes a successful one? In a recent study conducted by the Centene Center for Health Transformation, family members with a child enrolled in Medicaid who were eligible for a pediatric obesity program shared their insights on what can lead to greater engagement with health coaches and overall better health.

Top responses include family-based approaches, tailored strategies, and flexibility in scheduling. Some of the top challenges families faced with health coach engagement was not calling during scheduled time, missing scheduled calls, and calling at inconvenient times (e.g., during family meals, while they were at the store, and while they were at work).

The study, “A formative study to understand perspectives of families eligible for a pediatric obesity program: a qualitative study,” also examined coaching communication channels that would help increase member engagement.
